Oakland’s Hidden Gem. A Pizzaiolo Restaurant Wedding.
Leeza and Stephen’s Pizzaiolo Wedding in the Temescal District of Oakland
If you’re looking for a venue with excellent staff, incredible food and drink, and a space where you can party until late, check out Pizzaiolo in Oakland’s Temescal District. It’s a real hidden gem. As a wedding photographer, I’ve shot at lots of venues in the East Bay, and this is one of my favorites. I cannot recommend it enough if you value great food and drink and a beautiful atmosphere.
I recently photographed Leeza and Stephen’s Pizzaiolo wedding and was reminded just how much I enjoy this place.
Why a Restaurant Wedding Makes a Lot of Sense
Coordinating serving staff, rentals, beverages, and caterers separately is a lot to manage. Load-in and out can be substantial. Choosing a venue that handles most or all of that in-house takes a huge amount of stress off your plate. The downside of “all-in-one” venues is that they can often feel impersonal and overpriced with food that is just so-so. This is certainly not the case with Pizzaiolo.
Pizzaiolo is a working, well-loved restaurant that only takes on a limited number of weddings each year. Once you add up the cost of food, drink, staff, rentals, etc, you will realize that the buy-out price at Pizzaiolo gives you a lot of bang for your buck, especially for a Bay Area wedding venue.
Amazing Food and Drink Make a Celebration Unforgettable
Let’s dwell on the food a little bit. Because let’s face it, the best celebrations are accompanied by amazing food. The food at Pizzaiolo is so good. If you have eaten here, you know. It’s the kind of place where other restaurant owners, neighbors, and lovers of great food come to have a meal that feels like home. Sharing great food with friends and family is one of the core things people all over the world have in common. Tastes and smells can transport us, fill us up, and leave us with memories that last a lifetime. Pizzaiolo does not disappoint.
Because they cook the full menu for your wedding, you get to experience all the goodness they have to offer. How often have you gone to a restaurant and thought that everything looked great and wished you could order the whole menu? Well, at Pizzaiolo, that is basically what you get: the whole menu.
Wine, beer, and mixed drinks are all included in the buyout, and because this is a working restaurant, the bartenders keep everything moving smoothly without sacrificing quality. Pizzaiolo’s staff feels like family. They are attentive, know the menu inside and out, and make guests feel genuinely cared for. They serve a family-style meal that brings people closer together.
Pizzaiolo comes with lots of neighborhood charm. Besides the great food and community vibes that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside, you might see the kids who live above the restaurant come down to watch your ceremony, and if you’re lucky, the neighborhood cat might make an appearance.
How the Day Flows
While there are all different ways of arranging the events on your wedding day, this is what Leeza and Stephen’s day looked like.
Guests arrive & mingle – Guests arrive and socialize with drinks in the main restaurant and out back. It is a casual warm-up.
Immediate Family Portraits – There is a good spot by the ceremony site and near the entry to the restaurant for immediate family pics. We used both spots. Leeza and Stephen didn’t have a wedding party, so this was pretty straightforward.
Ceremony – Held on the back patio. Folks take their seats with the ceremony in front of the fountain. I have shot other configurations here, but I think this is the current standard.
Cocktail hour – Guests move inside for cocktails and appetizers while the patio is set for dinner. There is also a side area with tables and chairs where folks can hang out.
Couple Portraits – There are plenty of nooks, crannies, and sweet backdrops very close by. For our portrait session, we walked down The Alley and around to the front of the restaurant. Leeza and Stephen didn’t want to spend much time away from their party, so we made it quick.
Dinner & toasts – Outside in the patio area (or inside if weather is wet/ cold — there’s flexibility depending on your guest count).
Dessert & dancing – After dinner, guests are invited inside to close out the night. DJs and live bands usually set up near the front door, and folks dance in the main indoor dining space.

Final Thoughts on a Pizzaiolo Wedding
Pizzaiolo is most comfortable for weddings in the 80–110 guest range, with a cap around 120. The wedding in this post had around 135 guests, and while it worked, it was pushing the space’s limits. I think closer to 100 is more comfortable.
There is something really special about getting married at a locally owned restaurant with great food and staff that really care. If you want the feeling of an elegant backyard wedding with exceptional food, drink, and a space to dance the night away, Pizzaiolo is worth a serious look. It’s one of my favorite venues in Oakland because it has a great balance of cool indoor space, the funky alley around the corner, overall great atmosphere, wonderful staff, and great food and drink.
